Fortnite's popularity has skyrocketed since the game's first appearance in 2017, gaining millions of users worldwide, but that doesn't mean it's not a new concept to many—maybe to the ones who are researching ways to stay entertained (and occupied) during the ups and downs of the coronavirus lock downs.

If you fit into that scenario, then take a breath: it's OK if you're thinking about getting into the game, but have little to zero idea what Fortnite actually is, or how to get started.

In this quick USA TODAY's List Wire How-To, we'll give an overview of Fortnite and—more importantly—walk you through the steps for downloading the game on two of the most popular devices: PC and Android.

Fortnite?

(Catalina Fragoso-USA TODAY Sports)

Fortnite has always been in a constant state of evolution since we first began development, and so much has changed over the years as we've played and developed the game with you. As we near the three-year anniversary of Fortnite and Save the World's release, we wanted to. A great job was done by Epic Games, who made the game perform well on iOS. By the way, they also managed to keep it small enough with a 1.7 GB download. A classic Fortnite is represented in 3 different playing modes: Fortnite: Save the World, Fortnite Battle Royale and Fortnite Creative.

Here's the gist: There are three 'modes' that players can choose from—Battle Royale, Save the World, Creative. While all are worthy of a look, Battle Royale is the most popular. In it, players—either solo or as a team of two, three or four—drop into a map, along with 99 other players. From there, it's an all-out frenzy of survival and weapon-stashing, the wondrous enjoyment of cartoon-ish chaos.

  • Fortnite is an online video game developed by Epic Games. It has three different game mode versions: Fortnite: Save the World, a collaborative shooting game that can survive up to four players fighting zombie figures; Fortnite Battle Royale, a typical Battle Royale game, you can play free, and enjoy up to 100 players competing with you; and Fortnite Creative, players have the ability to create.
  • I just got Save The World today and when I beat the first mission Fortnite crashed. Now, whenever I try to start Save The World Fortnite crashes every time but the battle royal mode works fine. I'm playing it on a Radeon PC btw. Any help would be appreciated because right now I.

The goal is to get to the center of the map—which gets more difficult as the ring (sort of a boundary) you must stay inside decreases and the chance of running into other players increases. During that time, you can build shelter, set up traps, the works—all while defending yourself or team from the other users who are more than happy to take you out.

Whoever gets to the center of the map first, wins! It's fun—more so, it's 'free fun'—and the newest season (5) has even more characters and landscapes and all-things…well, Fortnite.

Got it? OK. Let's take a look at how to download the game…

If you're going to download the game on your Android, you first need to go to the Galaxy Store and find the Epic Games. From there, you'll be able to download Epic's app…which allows you to upload Fortnite's page … which then sets you up for the same type of steps you'd follow on your PC.

Novice note: Apparently, there have been a ton of scammers out there, taking aim at new users after Apple and Google pulled the app due to—as usual—monetary issues within the game's setup. So, if the app is the way you're going, be very mindful that it's the correct one that is being downloaded. Some out there are only designed to snag your personal data.
